    ABOUT THE DVD

HEAD FIRST is about pushing your limits, taking risks and moving into unknown territory without letting fear get in your way. HEAD FIRST explores Rozalind’s passion for combining music with silent film, and focuses on the people and places she has connected with during her six years touring across Canada in a wood-panelled station wagon. She features her favourite instrument, the flute.

Filmmakers from across Canada were asked to create silent films inspired from Rozalind’s compositions. Film locations range from the Belcher Islands in Nunavut to the Dempster Highway in Yukon Territory to Fogo Island in Newfoundland and Labrador and finally Toronto Island where Rozalind grew up. Film mediums range from digital HD to hand-processed black and white (16mm Bolex) to 35mm Ektachrome colour reversal film.

Over 24 filmmakers and musicians contributed to this project:

Scott Amos, Jean-Claude Batista, Mark Borowski, Joel Heath, Darryl Hopkins, Nicholas Kovats, Roger Maunder, Flamingo Pudding, Gina Rae Anderson, Dan Sokolowski and Ed Tanasychuk, Curtis Andrews, Rick Bailey, Veronica Charnley (Plumes), Dennis Gamberg, Geof Holbrook (Plumes), Matthew Hornell, Rozalind MacPhail, MouthPEACE, Mark Neary (Novaks), Stephen Pitkin (Elliott Brood), Scott Stevenson, Brad Weber (Caribou/Pick a Piper) and Mike Yates (Amos the Transparent).

HEAD FIRST was nominated for an ECMA and MusicNL award. It has been showcased at film festivals across Canada and the U.S and was featured at TEDx St. John's.

about

Music by Rozalind MacPhail
Lyrics by Ana-Maurine Lara
Film by Ed Tanasychuk

"In Between" from the Head First DVD project.

"In Between" was inspired by a poem that gifted U.S. poet, Ana-Maurine Lara shared with me many years back at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida. It's about the moment when you have to decide whether you're staying or going in a relationship. We've all been there. Edward M R Tanasychuk created the most perfect film for this topic, one I can very much relate to at the moment. Thanks to Josh Tidsbury for the mix and master, Mark Neary for the awesome bass and Scott Stevenson for the uplifting beats. I also must thank Lara Dodds-Eden and Dana Sipos for helping me record the final vocals on my last night at the Banff Centre and to Krisjan Leslie who helped me record all those flute parts.

lyrics

IN BETWEEN
Poem by Ana-Maurine Lara

In between the grains of sand there is a space where we fit without fear or reservation.

In between the blades of grass there is a space where we stand, eternity unfolding.

In between the water and the shore, history is written and rewritten and written again.

In between the light of stars and the darkness of time, there is a universe expanding.

There is a universe expanding, in between.

In the music of morning, there is a note that rises unhindered by dawn.

In the glow of dusk, there is a speck of dust dancing in the setting sun.

In between the moment before and the moment after, there are a thousand glances.

In between each heartbeat there is a possibility of living, of dying and of living again.

And here, right here, between these words, between these lines, between you and me.
