    ABOUT THE DVD

HEAD FIRST is about pushing your limits, taking risks and moving into unknown territory without letting fear get in your way. HEAD FIRST explores Rozalind’s passion for combining music with silent film, and focuses on the people and places she has connected with during her six years touring across Canada in a wood-panelled station wagon. She features her favourite instrument, the flute.

Filmmakers from across Canada were asked to create silent films inspired from Rozalind’s compositions. Film locations range from the Belcher Islands in Nunavut to the Dempster Highway in Yukon Territory to Fogo Island in Newfoundland and Labrador and finally Toronto Island where Rozalind grew up. Film mediums range from digital HD to hand-processed black and white (16mm Bolex) to 35mm Ektachrome colour reversal film.

Over 24 filmmakers and musicians contributed to this project:

Scott Amos, Jean-Claude Batista, Mark Borowski, Joel Heath, Darryl Hopkins, Nicholas Kovats, Roger Maunder, Flamingo Pudding, Gina Rae Anderson, Dan Sokolowski and Ed Tanasychuk, Curtis Andrews, Rick Bailey, Veronica Charnley (Plumes), Dennis Gamberg, Geof Holbrook (Plumes), Matthew Hornell, Rozalind MacPhail, MouthPEACE, Mark Neary (Novaks), Stephen Pitkin (Elliott Brood), Scott Stevenson, Brad Weber (Caribou/Pick a Piper) and Mike Yates (Amos the Transparent).

about

Music by Rozalind MacPhail

Film by Roger Maunder

This is a song that came from one of the most challenging times of my life, when I first moved to St. John's, Newfoundland and was wrongfully fired from a waitressing job at a big corporate restaurant right before Christmas. That winter, I couldn't afford heat, was sleeping on a cold air mattress and experienced what little nutrition the food bank had to offer. It was a very lonely and dark time.

"Corporate World" came out of this painful experience. Thanks to Josh Tidsbury for the mix and master, to Roger Maunder for the amazing film "I'm a Filmmaker" and to Matthew David Eric for the beautiful acoustic guitar, Veronica Charnley for the moving backup vocals and Mike Yates for the haunting cello.

I hold this song so close to my heart. Hope some of you can feel comfort knowing you're not alone when going through hard times.

lyrics

CORPORATE WORLD
by Rozalind MacPhail

You let me down today when I needed you the most.

DIsmissing me for being something that I'm not.

Tell me, where the hell did your heart go?

I saw you eyeing me like a hawk.

No compassion as you gave me your letter.

With only three weeks left until Christmas.

What standard did I not conform to?

What rule did I ignore?

Tell me, are you only concerned about your sales, your profits and your image?

Oh Faceless Corporate World,

Why can't you ever keep your word?

You follow your book by the letter.

Is this how you make your money?

Through being a bully,

Through creating fear.

I want to believe that you are better.
