    ABOUT THE DVD

HEAD FIRST is about pushing your limits, taking risks and moving into unknown territory without letting fear get in your way. HEAD FIRST explores Rozalind’s passion for combining music with silent film, and focuses on the people and places she has connected with during her six years touring across Canada in a wood-panelled station wagon. She features her favourite instrument, the flute.

Filmmakers from across Canada were asked to create silent films inspired from Rozalind’s compositions. Film locations range from the Belcher Islands in Nunavut to the Dempster Highway in Yukon Territory to Fogo Island in Newfoundland and Labrador and finally Toronto Island where Rozalind grew up. Film mediums range from digital HD to hand-processed black and white (16mm Bolex) to 35mm Ektachrome colour reversal film.

Over 24 filmmakers and musicians contributed to this project:

Scott Amos, Jean-Claude Batista, Mark Borowski, Joel Heath, Darryl Hopkins, Nicholas Kovats, Roger Maunder, Flamingo Pudding, Gina Rae Anderson, Dan Sokolowski and Ed Tanasychuk, Curtis Andrews, Rick Bailey, Veronica Charnley (Plumes), Dennis Gamberg, Geof Holbrook (Plumes), Matthew Hornell, Rozalind MacPhail, MouthPEACE, Mark Neary (Novaks), Stephen Pitkin (Elliott Brood), Scott Stevenson, Brad Weber (Caribou/Pick a Piper) and Mike Yates (Amos the Transparent).

HEAD FIRST was nominated for an ECMA and MusicNL award. It has been showcased at film festivals across Canada and the U.S and was featured at TEDx St. John's.

about

Music by Rozalind MacPhail

Film by Darryl Hopkins

"Chasing Sunshine" from the Head First DVD project, mixed and mastered by Josh Tidsbury. The beautiful film for this song was created by Avalon Stanley and features the lovely Deidre Gillard-Rowlings exploring the islands of Newfoundland.

I dedicate this song to the loving and supportive Moksha Yoga St. John's community which I am so grateful to be a part of. The lyrics were written by an Australian fella I met in Banff who I never got the name of. Handed him my lyrics book at Bruno's open mic night many years ago and before he left that night, he included his beautiful poem in my book.

Thanks to Lara Dodds-Eden and Dana Sipos for forcing me to complete my vocals during my last night at the Banff Centre, a challenging emotional time after a painful breakup. The drums are by Stephen Pitkin of Elliott Brood, acoustic guitar by Darryl Hopkins and bass synth by Dennis Gamberg.

lyrics

CHASING SUNSHINE
Poem by Anonymous

So go now be happy and enjoy these days.

Smile for the weather is fine.

We can't let the notes lead to material antidotes because we can't buy back our time.

For me, happiness is the ultimate yet many people spend time doing things that they

believe will lead to happiness in the future.

Why not be happy now?

Chase your dreams,

Break boundaries.

Burn to shine.

So go now be happy and enjoy there days.
