ABOUT THE DVD
HEAD FIRST is about pushing your limits, taking risks and moving into unknown territory without letting fear get in your way. HEAD FIRST explores Rozalind’s passion for combining music with silent film, and focuses on the people and places she has connected with during her six years touring across Canada in a wood-panelled station wagon. She features her favourite instrument, the flute.
Filmmakers from across Canada were asked to create silent films inspired from Rozalind’s compositions. Film locations range from the Belcher Islands in Nunavut to the Dempster Highway in Yukon Territory to Fogo Island in Newfoundland and Labrador and finally Toronto Island where Rozalind grew up. Film mediums range from digital HD to hand-processed black and white (16mm Bolex) to 35mm Ektachrome colour reversal film.
Over 24 filmmakers and musicians contributed to this project:
Scott Amos, Jean-Claude Batista, Mark Borowski, Joel Heath, Darryl Hopkins, Nicholas Kovats, Roger Maunder, Flamingo Pudding, Gina Rae Anderson, Dan Sokolowski and Ed Tanasychuk, Curtis Andrews, Rick Bailey, Veronica Charnley (Plumes), Dennis Gamberg, Geof Holbrook (Plumes), Matthew Hornell, Rozalind MacPhail, MouthPEACE, Mark Neary (Novaks), Stephen Pitkin (Elliott Brood), Scott Stevenson, Brad Weber (Caribou/Pick a Piper) and Mike Yates (Amos the Transparent).
